roberthleeii Posted February 6, 2022 Posted February 6, 2022 I recently installed the Zooz Zen32 scene controller in my house. I would like to use more of these because i like the ability to decouple the control from the main button and the ability to control multiple scenes from the controller but i cannot seem to figure out how to program it. I am a beginner at ISY but I can't seem to figure this controller out. I have the on/off of the main switch/relay down, it works fine but the scene control buttons have issues. I can get them to turn on scenes but not off (in both scenes and programs). It seems there is no off event that ISY recognizes. i can make it where i set 2 buttons to control a scene (one on, one off) but that leads to needing double presses on the buttons witch can get annoying and that uses 2 buttons where 1 should work. Please help. Again I am not very experienced and maybe missing something simple or just going about this the completely wrong way ?♂️ Thanks in advance, Robert

I wrote two programs to control it but the lights on the keypad would not always be guaranteed to be in sync.... Test bulb on - [ID 0003][Parent 0004] If 'ZW 019 Binary Switch / ZW 019 Scene Button 2' is switched On And 'Ilumin test bulb' Status is Off Then Set 'Ilumin test bulb' Fast On Else - No Actions - (To add one, press 'Action') Test bulb off - [ID 0007][Parent 0004] If 'ZW 019 Binary Switch / ZW 019 Scene Button 2' is switched On And 'Ilumin test bulb' Status is not Off Then Set 'Ilumin test bulb' Fast Off Else - No Actions - (To add one, press 'Action') I doubt this is the best way to do this

I have figured out how to get it basically working with the programming and changing the parameters of the LEDs within the program ?♂️ I guess this is good enough.

Tried looking all over in the scene and the controller in the scene and was not able to find a dropdown with that text. The scene will turn on the z-wave light I am using and the scene light on the controller will show the scene is active, but when press the scene button again the light on the controller shows the scene going off but the light stays on. this is the first z-wave controller I have really played with and have only used some insteon ones before and it does not seem to work the same. On the other hand i really have liked playing with the programing aspect of ISY

If you are on 5.3.4, and if Scene or Association do not show up in the dropdown (when you drag/drop them into the scene and click on each), then those devices are not capable of supporting Z-Wave scenes. After adding these to the scene that I created and click on these nodes, then nothing shows, other than the choice of Command, Default, Ignore.

xlurkr Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 I am fooling around again with a very old Monster IWC600 z-wave scene controller on my Vera, and the behavior is similar. It has 4 buttons, and they have mutually exclusively lit LEDs. The idea is that there is always a scene selected. Maybe that's what they were going for with the Zen32. To turn something off with the Monster controller you have to make a direct association with the button. If you do, the second press will turn off the associated light. The second press of any button also reports a button 0 push for each of the 4 buttons meaning, I guess, that the scene hasn't changed. Or something. -Tom

Or something. -Tom The zooz zen32 has leds (configurable so behavior be changed) for each of the 5 buttons and they are completely independent and only affected by the button is on. I feel like the zen32 only sends the on command but then I see that the led is kept in sync with on/off status....
upstatemike Posted February 10, 2022 Posted February 10, 2022 (edited) I haven't set this switch up in Polisy yet but I have used it in Homeseer and it pointed out to me the baffling and unnecessary complexity of the Z-Wave protocol. It is pretty basic and the expectation is that it would provide 11 devices to work with; 5 buttons, 5 LEDs, and 1 relay, and that there would be a register that tracks the status of each and allows for control of them. Instead only the relay is available for status reporting and direct association. For some reason not adequately explained, the 4 small buttons just change the value of a single Central Scene register and do not maintain any status of their own. The LEDs toggle when the associated button is pressed but that state is not exposed any place so you have to track status in your controller logic and use parameter commands to force the LEDs to reflect the actual state of the scene, load or whatever. I have never found any documentation to explain why Z-Wave is set up this way but it makes it a lot more complicated than it should be both for end users and for anyone trying to design a home automation controller with an easy to use rules engine. I know this doesn't help Robert in setting it up in Polisy but if in the process of resolving his situation somebody could explain why Z-Wave is designed this way in the first place it might provide some perspective on how come things that are simple with Insteon can become so challenging when translated to Z-Wave.
