Curious About Next Steps

IoP and PG3 are now in Beta (I think this is true) and we have a Polisy Version 2 interface for Polisy and PG2 related functions and a PG3 interface for PG3.  Will these two interfaces be merged into one with access to PG2, PG3, and Polisy?  I still have one node server on PG2 because it is not yet available on PG3, but will move it over as soon as it's available.  Other than this node server, all of my production devices and node servers are on IoP and PG3.  Just curious what the next big step will be.

I think it has been stated that PG2 development is over. I don't think you will see any additional activity for.

I would guess that when all node servers are available on PG3, PG2 will be phased out and shutdown.

I don't see it being shut down per se vs  natural obsolescence. Those with current Rpi installs would still be able to use their stuff until API updates break their installs since those node servers wouldn't receive updates.

I agree with @lilyoyo1 I doubt PG2 will receive a "shutdown".... there are many that have developed unpublished node servers specific to only them (or perhaps they don't feel they are polished enough to post in a store for others use, but they accomplish the needs of the developer... or perhaps they don't have the time it takes to provide public support for their nodesevers).  For that reason I doubt you'll see a breaking change that shuts down PG2, but as parts break they won't be repaired.

I would like the PG2 web interface moved to a different port for PG2 only, then reconfigure the default page for a general Polisy page with the update and admin features... and could have links to PG2 and PG3.... or maybe just swap PG2 and PG3 for now, and add the settings to PG3.

It seems strange to have deprecated PG2 as the default page, and have to use it for things like network configuration and to check for Polisy updates for PG3 etc.

The goal is to shut down PG2. It's using too much resources on Polisy:

storage:
mongo: 870M
polyglot: 330M

1.1GB is more than 1/4 of the total memory available on polisy.

CPU:

With no load:

mongo, always the most CPU consuming process using an average of 1% (doing nothing) and Polyglot is always second at 0.2% (doing nothing).

On the other hand, pg3 is not even in the top 20 processes or memory users. So, PG2 and mongo must go ... at this juncture, we have contact all PG2 developers and almost 3/4s have been ported. If we cannot contact the respective developers, we'll probably port PG2 node servers ourselves.

With kind regards,
Michel

@Michel Kohanim,

Thanks for the information on PG2.  I wasn't aware of some of the resource consumption issues.  I only have one more "must-have" node server that I need ported over to PG3 and the developer has indicated it's on their list.  Once that happens, i'll be ready to shut down PG2.  I'm assuming the PG3 interface will get all the settings and maintenance functions for Polisy in the near future.  This gives me an idea of what's coming.

Thanks!
