with insteon going away I plan to move to Zwave (I guess this is the best), but it seems with Zwave there are range issues that I never had with Insteon.  I was planning to move gradually, but without enough zwave devices would that be a range issue?  I hate to put repeater around my house (2000 sq ft) as they just take up sockets.  how may of these repeater would I need , any guesses?

Every house is different so a person can't tell you what you need without seeing things. Walls, furniture, turns, etc. will play a part in your network. See the tips and tricks for more information

Take a look at the Aeotec Zwave 700 range extender. It's both a repeater and signal amplifier. It should be located within about 20 feet of your ISY/Polisy and should give you the coverage you need. Also keep in mind that each non-battery Zwave device also acts as a repeater. The repeater should be mounted as high up as possible in an area free of obstructions.

I've added 4 z-wave devices instead of expanding Insteon and they're all at one end of the house where the controller is. So, no problems. I'm not sure I'm set on switching entirely to z-wave yet, still wondering about ZigBee.

Ditto here. I have experimented with a few Zwave devices but decided to stall that until I move in June but ZigBee still sounds like a better option from the forum rumour mills. The fact that a board or group of people set standards for it sounds much better than a single company controlling Zwave's future, and the problems I hear from Zwave users shows "it' ain't no Insteon protocol"
