Mail server failure

I recently migrated from an ISY994i to an EISY. It is running IoX v.5.5.7 and the default mail server doesn't seem to be working. I have left SMTP Settings as "Use Default". When I try to test the email addresses that I have loaded into the system I get the error message "Mail server failure [[SMTP_ERRORS--1]]"

Is there an issue with the mail server or is it something I have done wrong (more likely)?

@K-bert Make sure that you have at least one "group" in the lower section of that setup screen. Also make sure one group is selected when you run the test to. I just tried from my eisy with the default server settings checked and don't get an error.

If you continue to have issues you might want to try setting up a dummy Google Gmail account and use that for sending. Note that Gmail now requires higher security and an app specific password. The instructions on the wiki will walk you through setting that up to be sure it will work.

If you still get the error take a screen shot of the SMTP area and group area (white out personal contact info) just to confirm it's saved correctly.

Double check that the test message didn't go through. It could be showing up in your junk mail of the address you're sending it to. Sometimes the test message goes to Junk but actual notifications don't.  It's possible the system thinks it was rejected, but it actually connected and sent the test.

Ok, things are a little weird. I ended up rebooting my EISY. When it powered up I received an email telling me that someone has turned on the thermostat in the house. There is a program I have running that does do this if the thermostat is set to off and then turned on to heat. This program always emailed me after every reboot of the ISY. Now I received it from the EISY. I tried it with the both "use default" and the setup from above. Both worked.

However, running a test email after that fails. I received a slightly different error message this time.

EDIT: If I leave it as default the email is send by alerts@universal-devices.com and if I have the gmail account in there it is send by the google account I put in. This is expected behaviour, but it refuses to send any emails beyond that. Even if I try to run the same program to send the same message again.

@K-bert It's very strange to get a successful message then nothing. It might be time to submit a support ticket on this to see what's happening.

I know with my Gmail settings I can send a test and it works in back-to-back attempts (I allow about 20-30 seconds between presses).

When you're using Gmail make sure you are using an app specific password. It will NOT work if you're using your usual user@gmail.com password. Gmail changed last year to require higher security settings and not allowing random apps/services to just use user@gmail.com/password to log in.

Be sure to follow these instructions: https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY994:Configure_Mail_Server_Settings#Configuring_(unique)_App_Password

I doubt it matters, but maybe put something in the "From". It isn't required, but adding something might help. I just tried with mine and it sent fine with or without something in there and I'm using Gmail.

My screen looks this way:

I did follow those instructions and I am using a google generated password for an app. I tried filling out the "From" field. No change.

Since your test emails fail, are you following this when you send them:

Testing the Settings

"Go to Admin Console | Configuration tab | Emails/Notifications

Under Groups click on the Name and highlight the desired row/group to be tested

At the bottom, click on the Test button."

How about creating a email notification with an email substitute. It can be anything: status, temp anything.

You can find info here: https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY-994i_Series:EMail_and_Networking_Substitution_Variables

Then write a program to send it maybe 5 minutes and see if that works.

Just out of curiosity are you attempting to send to a SMS Gateway?

Example Sending a SMS via email to a T-Mobile Phone: 18005551212@tmomail.com <--- As of @ a year ago the International Calling Number (1 for USA) is now required even if your are in the USA.

PS - That number is actually 1-800 INFORMATION. Another cool trick to know is that if you want to access information (441) of lets say East Los Angeles and you live in New York. You would simply use the area code you wish to obtain a 411 Operator. Example for East LA: 1-909-555-1212 would gain you direct access to the 909 411 Operator.

I don't see how your post helps. Plus, this is not correct (just tested...sends just fine with 10 digits).

OP is clearly sending an email to text number (the @pcs.rogers.com). However, that wouldn't (shouldn't) result in errors on the admin console side as described above.

@K-bert - Since it's ongoing, and you've tried additional troubleshooting steps, I would suggest (again) opening a support ticket to get direct help on this issue.

Please update this thread with the results and fix from the support ticket.

Good luck!

Depends on if your SMS Gateway you are sending too. it's safer to use the full 11 digits. Some SMS Gateways will not add the Country Code if missing. So yes, it's helpful information.

PS - It has to do with the FCC implementation of the national suicide hotline that occurred in October 2021 and other crisis numbers released in 2022. Just sending the 11 eliminates problems. Most metro areas don't even use 7 digit anymore either and require 11 even for a local call across the street.

I have submitted a ticket. After some back and forth there have been no changes in behaviour.

UD support has been remote logged into my computer playing with my EISY. Looks like we now know what the problem is, just not why. The EISY is timing out when trying to send an email. The EISY is connected to my network through an ethernet cable yet the upload speed seems to be too slow. Looks like it isn't the EISY, but the cause isn't yet know.

Next steps is to try a different port on the router/switch. Since I was not at home for the remote session this hasn't yet been done. We tried to get it to talk over wifi, but it wouldn't switch from cabled to wifi remotely for some reason. After about an hour we had to give up for today. We will try again on Monday.

I have to say that I really appreciate that they are willing to spend this time to try and troubleshoot remotely like this.

Can you make sure you are using a good cable? Have you tried just swapping the CAT5/6/7 Cable. Whichever you are using.  Might want to pick up a CAT6 on the way home just for testing too...

I am using the same cable that was connected to the ISY994, I just swapped it over. I have a pile of cables at home so I will swap them as well as use a different port. I will also try wifi. Should have more info after Monday.

I agree. Glad they were able to try to help. Hopefully when you get home it will be as simple as swapping out the cable. I tend to make a habit out of using new cables when I connect new devices. So perhaps that will be a simple fix for you.

Thanks for the update

Well, I gave swapping the port and cable a try when I got home. The original configuration was ISP-Router-Switch-EISY. It is now ISP-Router-EISY.

I'm afraid things got worse. Now the IoX finder can't see the EISY. I still have access through portal and on my phone though. Giving up for the night.

EDIT: I should add, entering the address the router gave it comes back with "invalid url".

You should be able to load the IP into the ISY Launcher manually. Double check that eisy is still using the same IP address. When changing cables you may have been issued a new IP address.

I had logged into my router and used the IP that it listed for the EISY after switching cables/ports.

@K-bert I originally jumped on this thread because I too had problems with SMTP after upgrade to 5.5.7 .  I fixed my problem by clearing the "From" field and letting it use the default but that still didn't fix the first two, I had to delete and re-create the first two Custom notifications.  But now it seems to be working good so far now.

After reading your post I wanted to suggest setting up reserved DHCP on your router.  I had to do that when the ability to specify an IP addy was removed in the eisy.  By using reserved DHCP your eisy will get the same address every time and that worked for me.

I had the ISY set to a static IP. I haven't done that yet foe the EISY.

My router updated its firmware and rebooted at one in the morning. I can find the EISY in the IoX finder again. Email still doesn't work.

I will try setting up a wireless connection tomorrow as I was instructed by UD support. If that doesn't work I'm fairly certain I will have another remote session on Monday.

Does UD know that you are using a static IP?

That is not the preferred method of maintaining a permanent fixed IP address, as it has been known to cause different issues. U D recommends establishing a DHCP reservation in your router. This will enable your ISY to have a fixed IP by always issuing the same IP address.

In fact, the ability to establish a static IP address has been removed from eisy.

I would use a static IP in the router. That is how I had set up the ISY. I havent set up anything for a static IP for the EISY yet. I would like to sort out the problem I currently have first.
