EISY Didn't Come Back Online

I just started the upgrade process per the latest blog from UD.  I connected to my EISY through the IoX Launcher, did a backup, then did Upgrade Packages.  My EISY went offline and has been offline for more than an hour.  UD Mobile  reported ISY blah is now offline.  The Home Screen in UD Mobile has a red triangle error symbol.  The IoX Launcher cannot find my EISY. My ISY Portal page shows the device is offline.  What happened and how do I get it back online?

I just had the same thing happen on a Polisy.

I have the image file from UD, so I pulled the SSD, flashed the image, then restored my backup.

I noticed that after flashing the image file from UD, my 128gb ssd has 124gb of it left unallocated.  I can fix this on a PC, but I have no idea how to fix this on a linux setup.  None of my usual methods will let me do anything.  I wonder if there simply wasn't enough space for the upgrade to proceed.

Of course if you have an eisy, I suspect that the ssd was properly partitioned to use all the space.

That's the thing with disk image files. It simply takes an exact picture of what's on your disk, sector by sector. It doesn't know or care if it's unix, windows, etc. To have a bigger filesystem than the 32 GB that the UDI image was created with, you'd have to go through an actual installation of unix, setting up filesystems, etc. Because all Polisys are the same when shipped, it was much easier for UDI to make one detailed installation they way they wanted it, and then clone the disk image to make the product.

I found some instructions on youtube for expanding the partition to fill the drive.  After I did that, I did the upgrade again and it worked.  Just to be clear, I had to reflash the image file first since it was bricked after trying the upgrade the first time.

So the power button on my eisy remains off.  Should I try to turn the device back on?

I would say yes.

first time I tried to log back in Java admin, it asked for portal credentials.  Lit off but everything was blank.  Went back to new interface, everything there.  Went back to Java and everything showed up

So it may take more than one login attempt.

Well my perfectly working EISY is now apparently a brick. I did the first step in the upgrade process which was to Upgrade Packages and EISY is now dead.  It has been 6 hours.  I tried pulling the power plug and plugging back in.  Nothing.  The power button is blue but no console shows up in IoX Finder.   What now???

After updates (not both v6) I have two Polisae crash my SSDs.

I suspect that the intensive wear and tear on the SSD devices doing this major update just finishes off the SSD that are already on the edge.
Michel made a comment to me that cheap SSDs do not last long and I am guessing "cheap" means the smaller memory drives that possibly have less memory saving algorithm space.
In my case, I have ordered another 64GB  SSD (larger than the stock 32GB and $27 CAD), I already have a USB/eSATA adapter ($10), and Rufus, the imager software, but I have destroyed my existing image files, so I need support to offer me a later download link yet.
The SSD fix is easy and quick, but takes reloading and updating everything.

Not necessarily your problem but it can be a fix or a backup for future problems.

Best of luck!!

Polisy does take a long time to update and reboot. I imagine eISY would be the same thing. Others have reported over 30 minutes for bootup. The update is major.

Is a factory reset the next step? I have a backup I took right before I did the Upgrade Packages.

Go back and read UD's instructions in the announcement post. If it's bricked, you will need to reflash the drive.

@larryllix I did read it but it's beyond my capabilities.  I have no idea how to replace the SSD and reflash it or whatever the term is.  I am an average user.  No clue how do what you suggest.

You need to open a support ticket with UD.

A support ticket should tell you what you need to do. It is a lot easier than I thought.

Open case
Snap SSD drive out of clips
Slide SSD into USB holder/adapter
(UDI will give you link to advert on amazon. ~$10)
Plug in adapter to USB port
Run Rufus software (free)
Select SSD drive
Select image UDI supplies
Start
Put SSD back into slot
Close up case
Reboot Polisy
Run IoX
Click update
Load your files back in.

I would add that you need to resize the ssd partition.  After I did this on polisy, it worked fine until I did the update which bricked it. I noticed that the restored image only created a 3GB partition and left the rest of the drive unused. I reflashed the ssd and followed instructions from a YouTube video I posted on a different thread to expand the partition to fill the entire SSD. After that my update went fine.  Of note, following the update, 6GB of the drive was used.

Thanks for the info but if this is what I have to do to get my EISY back online, I may be getting out of the EISY automation world.  My EISY (and ISY-994 before) worked flawlessly and was easy to administrate.  This is getting way too complicated for the average non-techie person.

Just FYI - Michel responded to my ticket and wanted me to connect an HDMI monitor (which I have) and a USB keyboard (which I don't have) to my EISY take a picture of the last things shown on the screen when I tried to boot it up.  I responded I don't have a keyboard.  I use a wireless bluetooth keyboard on my Mac.  So now I'm waiting to hear what my next step might be.

I was supplied a completely new image for my drive. It may have contained a larger partition....not sure. Not sure how I would tell.

This sounds like the update overran the partition size and crashed the system. This may have been the basis a previous the "memory space" limitation in Polisy systems. Actually SSD partition space.

Two ways I know,  The easiest is to ssh into eisy/polisy and issue the command df.  The other is to take your ssd out, put it into a usb card adapter and plug it into your pc and then go to computer management and click on storage/disk management and it will show you.

As you can see here I am using ~6GB out of ~120GB.
