Finding "noise" problems

I have an ISY and I took it to my friends house yesterday to help him program a new insteon install. The ISY was new as well. We seem to have noise issues and I am not sure the best way to try and find them? I spoke to Michel on the telephone and he was very helpful with getting the devices to show up but there seems to be some noise on the line. When you press a button on the KPL it will flash for a second or so -- my question is, how can we find the cause of the noise? I have done quite a bit of searching and see that computers, etc cause noise -- if you need the computer to access the ISY how can you test the system with the PC unplugged? Do you need to remove CFLs from the lamps or are they only causing noise when turned on?? Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately, it can be quite a project. Regarding the PC - it's important to plug the Insteon PLM as far away from the PC as possible. Sometimes another outlet in the same room is fine, other times you might want to find another circuit.

Troubleshooting is really a matter of trial and error. Some CFLs can cause issues, but mine do not. You can try unplugging things you think might be causing noise, or turning off entire circuits via the breaker panel.

Once you find the culprit, SmartHome sells FilterLincs that can filter out devices causing noise on your circuit.

How many Insteon devices do you have installed? How large is the home? Do you have AccessPoints installed on opposite phases? Do you have an AccessPoint plugged into your PLM?

The house is about a 2000 sq ft bungalow. The access points are installed correctly and we tried plugging one into the PLM -- the PLM was on an extension cord and everything was in the computer room on the same circuit. I will try moving the ISY away from that area with a long network cable and see if that works -- in that room is a Sat. internet modem, PC, network hub and florescent light all plugged into a powerbar -- sounds like that may be asking for trouble?

Thanks in advance

Hi Glenn,

Have you tried unplugging the florescent light from the powerbar?

Also, please review this post: http://forum.universal-devices.com/viewtopic.php?t=507

With kind regards,

Michel
