Hello GaryT, Can you let us know if both models are the newer hardware where it supports 100-277 VAC @50/60 Hz?
-
Not a problem as its easy to get lost in the whole automate everything. One of the hardest things I find that people don't fully understand is that *Any Device* should operate in its native way with out thinking. A lay (common) person who enters a home should not have to decipher what something does or ask questions of how it functions. Doing so will open the home and the occupants to mistakes and in the extreme situation life or death. Other things people fail to realize is any device that is modified from the OEM specification by default is void of any UL / cUL and safety ratings. When I see people using RPi's into their HVAC system for control I just have to shake my head in disbelief. The HVAC system in most cases is one of the most critical and expansive elements in the home. People really need to apply some common sense in what they do because there are just too many instances where things just went completely wrong.

I'm sorry I referenced that thread. [emoji17] Lets please not reply back to the link offered by Larry. The OP was sincere and corrective actions have been made so we are told. I personally came out blazing in that thread because there were items that needed to be addressed and discussed. [emoji35] Having said this, the OP in that specific case was sincere and did realize proactive measures needed to be made moving forward. No need to kick the dog again. ☹️[emoji58] ========================= The highest calling in life is to serve ones country faithfully - Teach others what can be. This is true given some of the past forum threads where someone almost burnt their house down due to a accidental scarf falling on table lamp that returned to the on state after a power loss. Given the OP indicated its for a clock radio and now knows this dual outlet relay supports *Last Known* state. He should move forward knowing what he plugs in should respect fire / safety.
-
The latest dual outlet remembers its last *Known State* whether it be on-off. The benefit is if you lose power it will return to the on position assuming this was the last known state.
-
I don't follow if you have no plans to control the top outlet why then have a program? No program = no problems?

In no specific order of importance but still relevant in your ask. 1. Hard reset all devices to a OEM state prior to enrolling with the ISY Series Controller. This will ensure all devices are void of any half links, programming etc. 2. The ISY Portal comes with the *Network Module* during the 2 year subscription. Once it lapses you will lose that network module capability. I highly suggest you purchase the module so you have it forever for a one time purchase. 3. The ISY Portal is an extension of the controller as you noted it supports the following and many other services in the near future: IFTTT, Amazon Echo, Honey Well etc. The portal offers a very much plug and play feature set for IFTTT & Echo keeping in mind all of this can be done simply with the use of the Network Module but requires all the sweat equity of the end user. Paying for the portal allows the majority of users to enjoy life and not worry about back end maintenance's. If your trying to find balance in life vs HA this will offer you that time vs life. 4. HTML5 is still being worked on from UDI so its on the road map still no ETA. For now you have the choice of Java or downloading the applet. 5. PLM: Its been awhile since I looked at the hardware support but do recall other PLM's being supported. I can't honestly say I have read of many people using something other than the 2413S / 2312S PLM's. I believe there were a few members who used the Smartenit PLM which is based on the same hardware. 6. Smart App: This member has created an alternative and based on casual review has been a big hit with the forum members. Its a nice option to the standard Mobilinc offering: http://forum.universal-devices.com/forum/120-agave-android-app/ 7. Z-Wave: The company is still working on fine tuning and hammering out multi channel support. Over all it seems the Z-Wave support is pretty stable and most products are supported. As you probably noted the hardware does not support the latest Gen5 chip set and there is no ETA on this. If Z-Wave is something you're interested in because of having options, flexibility, and fail over. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase the add on hardware because for $79.XX its not going to break the bank. Upgrading to the next generation hardware when available will just be a snap in and remove moving forward.

I would have thought a company like Phillips would have at least made the behavior adjustable. For those who like the return to white or full on when power is restored, great. For those who like return to *Last known State* this offers the best operational use . . . It should be noted that both Insteon bulbs can be adjusted to last known state vs full on. Unfortunately no one seems to care enough to program the system to take advantage of this option.

LOL . . .

Despite popular belief, this forum is normally self moderated and personal attacks and calling some one a asshole isn't tolerated. When someone challenges you on a topic, subject matter, response, it would be to your benefit to reply back with supporting facts which bolster your position. You have entered a forum where many of the user are extremely intelligent, high thinking, and often times have a off color sense of humor. Writings are normally taken out of context when other means of communicating inflection such as emoticons are not used. I would suggest you take some time to consider why you are here - how you will contribute - and how much learning you wish to do. At the current pace you are at its like watching someone trying to fly fish with a brick attached. Now Garry, your supposed to be drinking umbrella drinks and basking in the sun. Not prodding others to quicksand in hopes of a few moments of pleasure. LOL . . .

To be fair to the Interwebs it alone has offered so very much to so many people in terms of knowledge, communications, and learning. There will always be those who wish to abuse the technology along with malice intent. Long live the Internet's . . .
-
The poll highly depends upon the visibility of said poll. Given Larry published this information in the UDI forum it would make sense the ISY would be seeing decent numbers. If the same poll was placed in the Vera forum well guess what Charlie Brown? In the ideal world a survey monkey of the very same would be pushed to all HA enthusiasts that would offer a true insight as to the world populations. I do however find it odd and funny at the same time that not one single vendor ever goes out of their way to indicate the total population of their wares. Keeping in mind you simply can't say its based on units sold because if a warehouse has XXX thousands, millions, on a shelf that's not the same as being in the end users hands.

I guess the author forgot to include any of the Insteon HUB's as a possible option?!?!
-
For informational purposes only the ISY Series Controller can accept a supply voltage from 5-30 DC (center positive).
-
It should be noted also if your homes electrical power supply fluctuates a lot this too can take out sensitive electronics which the 2413S PLM is. Despite popular belief electronic devices are not just impacted by outside surges like POCO line voltage swings, and random lightning events. 99% of the out of band micro surges come from with in the home like a fridge, sump, furnace, AC, etc. The most concerning thing people need to understand and realize is most electronics made today are not designed to sustain a voltage sag ( brown out). Power supplies that do not have well regulated systems will react as expected which is when voltage falls - current rises. This increase in current (amperes) will quickly smoke traces, micro controllers, and transistors. Besides voltage sags the next biggest threat is *sustained* voltage rise which exceeds 130 VAC. Most if not all common electronics are designed to operate from 109 - 130 VAC sustained voltages RMS. This is why the latest Insteon hardware that supports 100-277 VAC 50/60 Hz is such a welcome addition. As the standard home will rarely if ever see (RMS) line voltages in this magnitude. Even if it did since the PSU is designed to sustain these line voltages indefinitely no harm would come to them. Added to the fact some of them have declared they can sustain 1000 volt surges. Unfortunately none of what I have described has been incorporated into the 2413S PLM?!?!
-
No, the 2413S PLM does not supply power to the ISY that was the 2412S PLM of years past. You will need a PSU for the ISY Series Controller which can take a wide range in voltage(s).

Smarthome "Sale" for Labor Day on Echo (not really)
Teken replied to Schroeder's topic in Amazon Echo
While I agree the consumer needs to do their own part in comparative shopping considering its so easy with the Interwebs. This doesn't address the companies (SH) handling of inflated pricing before sales promotions are listed. My view is unless that $5.XX means that much to a person. For me it would never sway me to purchase an item with only 30 days worth of hardware warranty given the fact its clear to me there isn't much QA on the returned product(s). I've seen a few people receive defective items where the unit didn't respond to linking, bad LED, to devices pulsing on-off. Most people know I have no problem throwing Apple under the bus when needed. But I can tell you they have one of the very best refurbished programs out there for the hardware they sell. Every device gets a new outer shell unless its pristine and every device receives a brand new battery along with a full 12 month warranty. Any accessories like ear phones, manuals, etc are included. None of this happens at Smarthome - my understanding is unless a product is obviously damaged on the outside the returned product is simply placed into large bins labeled returns. Then when ever someone sees the bin is at a certain level they start to list off the items for refurbish sales. Based on this how can anyone have faith on a product that has a 30 day hardware warranty?!?! If the item was only $15-20.XX at that price point I would consider it a calculated risk and know going in its a 50-50 chance of win / lose. Unfortunately none of the refurbished items are priced in the $15-20.XX price point! -
Smarthome "Sale" for Labor Day on Echo (not really)
Teken replied to Schroeder's topic in Amazon Echo
I've commented on this before in several threads already in this site. I am not sure who is in charge of the promotional sales (pricing) at this company but they need to reevaluate that persons standing. In many places its highly illegal to offer a so called sale while in reality they have increased the base price. Lots of people have chimed in saying its done all the time vs others saying *Its their business they can do what ever they like*. True . . . But unlike years past there wasn't the Internet and massive on line presence of various forums and customer feedback. I'm not sure why there are still so many companies that believe they can get away with price fixing. In the ideal world a business would price their wares / services where a decent profit margin could be had. In the world we all live in today it seems there is no rhyme or reason for prices. Its like when I receive the weekly flyer for Canadian Tire where they will have the same exact 60 piece tool set for 20-30-55% off the so called regular price. Only a moron would pay full retail pricing on something that routinely goes for less five days later. This is like any of the Insteon products that are currently being sold for hundreds of percentages over actual component costs. I don't begrudge any company being able to make a decent profit and living on their wares / services. But companies like Smarthome really need to start to smell the virtual coffee and plant their feet on the ground. Over the years prices have actually gone up and not down on various products at Smarthome. Given the steady increase and adoption of Home Automation it appears to me they believe its acceptable. Only time will tell if consumer feels the very same way as the last 16 months have shown massive one time sales events. While other times its like someone said * I need another VW on my drive way so lets jack up the prices this week*?!?! I will really never understand the whole mentality of pricing something unreasonable and then in the same breath offer it on sale several times a year. When its crystal clear they continue to rake in massive profit on items that costs mere dollars per unit. What I find incredibly shocking in all these years not a single Chinese company has ever tried to copy and sell the very same hardware. I have to gather the hardware isn't the problem so much as being able to reverse engineer the firmware where the product will operate like the real thing. Then again if the Chinese can copy a stealth plane, rocket, satellite, phones, cars, name your poison. I have to gather its because they don't see a profit in it as its clear the HA topology wars is over 7 years ago. -
No, you want to see bad just go to about anywhere in India. I honestly thought all of those funny images I would see in emails were Photoshop or jokes. But a few friends that live in different parts of India have sent me photo's of the electrical, telephone, wiring is unbelievable. Never mind the packing of humans on trains, cars, buses . . . It makes those past circus acts I saw way back in the day where the clowns stuffed in 8-10 guys into a VW bug look like nothing. Seeing hundreds of Indians hanging off a fast moving train on the outside of the roof, foot bars, and door hangs is just insane!

That is so awesome haven't seen those in ages! They were very common in Asia when I traveled for work back in the day. What Cocoontech members biased?!?! Say it ain't so LMAO . . .

The only Insteon hardware device that needs to be called out is the *Toggle Linc*. This is probably the only single band lighting switch Smartlabs hasn't updated since product launch. I call this out because there are many folks that have an affinity to that old school look and feel. I personally have never liked the look or feel of the mechanical toggle switch since its inception. Having said this if you have existing toggle switches you can easily integrate Insteon micro modules to make them *Smart Switches*. This assumes box fill and room isn't an issue in your home. As older homes from 1990 and before had some really shallow box's . . .
-
Per Larryllix, Please ensure you read the full users manual for what ever dual band device you have in the home to confirm and validate proper coupling / bridging via the 4 tap beacon test. I call this out because older hardware which had white LED's required the person to understand fully the LED behavior. Whereas some of the older dual band KPL relays also flashed their buttons / didn't flash to reflect same phase / opposite phase. Then there are the plugin lamp linc / on-off relay modules. One needs to be aware you must ensure the device is turned on (Green LED) before you initiate the 4 tap beacon test. Failure to do this will cause endless confusion as to the same leg / opposite leg being coupled / bridged - or not.

Any insight as I completed the survey late in the evening and didn't bother putting on my P.I. hat?
-
I would encourage you to filter all of the devices which are on the same circuit using a power bar. Or move the 2413S PLM on to a dedicated circuit which does not have other noise makers / signal suckers on the same branch circuit. When using high quality CAT6 Ethernet cable which is 23 awg you can extend the distance and placement of the 2413S PLM. As serial data has a defined limit . . . Having said this in my personal experience and hundreds of installs I've been able to use 75 feet at the outer limit with out issues. I normally don't exceed 25 feet in most applications and hover around 10-15 feet for (A) Typical installs. This will give you the flexibility to move the 2413S PLM to a circuit (assuming) one exists in that room, area, zone, floor. It should be noted not all CAT6 cable is indeed 23 awg most are 24 awg and many more are using CCA materials. Do not purchase Copper Clad Aluminum (CCA) Ethernet cable from anyone regardless of how cheap it is! As this type of cable is of low quality and isn't approved for in wall use besides casual and random usage.
