Sound files are large so we will only include 6-10. Files must be available .wav and less than 30 seconds, preferably less than 10 seconds. It's quick and easy.

I wish some old Blackberry alert tones were royalty free. They had some attention getters. I like the thought of having customizable tones rather than default iOS/Android alert functions. But I guess Android allows a lot of different variability than iOS. Most apps don't think of including customized ring tones, and if they do just a handful is enough to make it feel customized. We all know what it's like to be in a crowed area and hear somebody's (default) Ring doorbell/camera alert go off...just watch how many people grab for their phone. It's comical to people watch that way. Good luck picking!

With regards to making/accepting non-licensed or altered sounds it increases probability of litigation. A $5 dollar license can save a lot of headache down the road.? 2 1

MrBill Posted June 25, 2022 Posted June 25, 2022 I have a frog ribbet and duck quack that I use with the notification node server. I like both because they're short and I notice them (I have trouble hearing high pitches) and they are different than other cell phone noises, so I instantly know what it's telling me. Not sure what free site I downloaded them from. I also use the AOL instant messenger door open sound as a door chime sound. And for a good chuckle the mailbox opening sound is AOL's "You've got mail" Not sure if those fall in the public domain or not but I got each of them from a free .wav site. 2

I said they were .wav's before but I stand corrected after trying to find them... they are .mp3's from a free site (Pushover uses .mp3 which is apparently very similar to .wav-- according to google "The difference between MP3 and WAV is a matter of “compressed” or “lossless” formats. MP3 is compressed, and WAV files are uncompressed. The answer is this, you want WAV files for editing a podcast, and MP3 files for distribution (think iTunes). The issue is at the OS level for notifications, .wav is the only file type supported for notifications on both platforms when the apps are not in the foreground. There are legal issues to consider if the file is altered/converted. I doubt anyone would report us but it is easier to have unaltered/licensed files. We will try to add the ability to insert custom sounds in the future, but it has a lower priority to some other features. 1

Maybe in the future on Android, but not iOS. This is low on my priority list as Android users already have this ability with notification channels. On Android you can change the sound for any channel (the defined sound files). Long press the app icon, click info (encircled "i") > Notifications > Select a channel (sound file) > Sound.
