UD Mobile: Intermittent Geofence operation

Hi @Javi, I've noticed intermittent operation for me with the geofence functionality.  It seems to happen more when I exit then when I return.  When I leave the geofence I can see the departure acknowledged. but the variable does not change.    There is an error in the log, attached.  What is causing this?

Thank you.

Request timeout, odd that it took almost 10 minutes to log.  The good thing is we know the app is still running.

I have one other similar report, but have not received the log so not sure if it is the same issue.

How large is the geofence radius? Are you in a vehicle when this happens, if so does your device connect to the vehicle WiFi?

Thanks for the reply. The geofence is less than 1/8 mile. I don’t have vehicle WiFi so the switchover for my phone is to cell service.

Thanks.  What is the command being sent on fence crossing, such as device, scene, variable or program?   Are you using TestFlight?

I'm going to try to modify the connection request in case Apple is cutting the app's network access, but do not want to release to all users without testing.

Just a note: I'm experiencing geo-fence issues with missed crossings using another app (Locative) on iOS16.4.1. I hope Apple has not introduced a new geofence failure in iOS 16.4.1 . I've only had a few failures that I haven't been able to diagnose, so far it missed me leaving twice, my wife leaving once, and yesterday it missed me returning.  Locative has not updated in 8 months, and this was not happening before iOS 16.4.1.

Thanks @MrBill,

I'm racking my head on this one, but I have not upgraded to 16.4.1.   It does appear to be iOS stopping network requests.

Edit: Confirmed the other user reporting issue is also on 16.4.1

@tmorse305,

Are you on 16.4.1?

@tmorse305,

Are you on 16.4.1?

And if further info helps, I just updated to 16.4.1 and geofencing isn't working. My wife hasn't upgraded her ios yet and geofencing still works fine on her phone.

I'm going to hold off doing the update to 16.4.1.  Yesterday I left 3 times.  It worked 2 out of 3.  All the re-entries were ok.

I'm wondering if the device is switching from WiFi to Mobile when the command is sent.  Can you please try to increase the radius to allow time for WiFi disconnect?

Hi @Javi, I increased the radius from 200 to 500.  I'm 3 for 3 so far so maybe that was the issue.  I'll keep you posted if that changes.  Thanks all for the heads up on 16.4.1, I'm going to wait until the dust settles before updating iOS.

@tmorse305 as far as I know I haven’t had any missed geofence triggers. I don’t have one that fires daily so it’s possible there could be issues, but I use both UD Mobile and MobiLinc for Geofence. Both have continued to work fine in the last few weeks (since I updated to iOS 16.4.1).

I don’t think there would be any iOS related issues, but does puzzle me if @MrBill is having issues now and then, but he has complained about Comcast dropping so might be network related misses (just speculation).

I would think it if was a widespread iOS issues there would be a lot more posts here or on other geofence related systems like it was a few years ago when Apple really did break geofence in a major iOS release.

Comcast dropouts have nothing to do with this.  I still haven't been able to prove its apple's fault tho.  One failure yesterday, but it was my wife's phone and I wasn't with her to look at her phone at confirm that Locative hadn't fired.

I also use Geofency on my phone.  On rare occasions I'll get a message that a webhook failed.  I switched from Locative years ago because it was unreliable for me.  Geofency has worked even when the UD geofence did not.  Hopefully a larger radius will solve the problem.  I'd like to retire Geofency in favor of the UD solution.  One less thing to manage.

Mine is a Privacy Setting issue, but others could be impacted.  I have two apps on each phone that should be set to "Always" under Privacy & Security > Location Services.  All 4 had been changed to "When Using".  I'm not sure why that change occurred, neither my wife or I remember seeing the annoying nag to set those away from "Always".  What changed those settings?  an update perhaps?

Thanks @MrBill,  Maybe others will check.  UDM should check these permissions whenever the Geofence Screen is opened.

It is also possible the Portal issue reported yesterday was the cause of other issues.  All, please update if the issue persists.

I began using UD Mobile geofence features a few weeks ago and found them very reliable - wrote some logic to report UD Mobile and Mobilinc geofence entries/exits for comparison and they were very similar.  However recently updated to 16.4.1 and (around the same time) noticed the geofence triggers aren't happening (I had since disabled Mobilinc geofence so can't see if they're both impacted now).

I'm hoping this is an iOS issue and will wait it out to see what happens....

Does the issue persist today as we had a portal issue resolved late yesterday? Can you verify the app has Always Access to Location as Some above have reported the iOS upgrade may have reset the permission?

@Javi cannot confirm about crossing geofence as I haven't left my area today, but the app is set to "Always" for iOS 16.4.1 for me. I do not recall having to change it since the iOS update whenever it was released.

@MrBill sorry...understood that your internet drops don't play in. I was thinking that it would potentially create an issue for not triggering something on the IoX if not connected. You're saying at the phone level itself the Geofence isn't triggering on your apps. Strange that your apps had changed settings.

I do recall a a few popups soon after the 16.4.1 update for some location tracking apps asking me again to allow "always" tracking. I wasn't expecting some at the time so might have been tapping from muscle memory and inadvertently changed some to another setting without realizing it.

@Javi I can confirm there have been no geofence triggers all weekend, and just verified location tracking is set to Always with Precise Location.

Please send me a PM with a copy of the UDM backup file so I can review the logs.

I also am having really poor geofence results.  Exit seems to fire more than entry for me and my wife.

we are on 16.4.1.

Please send me a PM with copy of the UDM backup file or check the Geofence Log.

As of today, all logs received from users show either a setup error, disabled Geofence, or the issue was resolved by increasing the Geofence radius.
