I am thoroughly confused, do I need to go eisy?

Hi all,

I have an ISY944 and I let the license expire a few weeks ago. Seems like there's a hard push to get over to eisy but I'll admit, I know nothing about it. I have a mix of Insteon, X-10 (very limited these days) and Z-wave plug in units. I have a PLM that goes from my wall outlet to the ISY with a Cat 5 cable that I'd like to get rid of if possible but I don't think I can right? I believe insteon needs that?

I don't do anything too crazy, mainly just remote control of lights and turning everything on and off at Christmas.

I don't want to pay the $44 license fee on the ISY now if I'm going to be upgrading but I'm kind of under the gun since it's Christmas list time.

thanks for any advice!

Also I should add on my phone, I use Agave for instant control of things but I'm not tied to it if there's better options. I also don't care if everything comes over or not, I have no problem re-adding all the switches and such to essentially have a clean install.

The ISY994 was discontinued and is no longer supported. The license fee is optional, and is for the ISY remote portal. If you access your ISY only from home then that can be done with the IoX Launcher for which there is no fee.

The cable from the PLM to the ISY is a custom cable that was furnished with the
PLM, not a standard cat5 cable.

If, in the future, you want to add newer Zwave and Insteon devices, and you would like to access your devices from a smartphone using the free UD Mobile app, then you probably need the EISY along with the Zwave option and the portal.

Thank you! That gives much clarity. I don't have to rush into anything then. The only issue I have is that when I bring up the IoX Launcher, it says not found and when I go to add based on the UUID at https://my.isy.io/index.htm it appears to only want a URL and says invalid URL when I put the UUID in. Not matter what I click on at my.isy.io, it says access license expired.

It's definitely online and works because every nite my window candles come out at sunset and go off at 22:30

I downloaded the latest Java version (version 8, update 431) but when I click on the link, it downloads the start file. I laungh that with JavaWS and it doesn't find my ISY

HP laptop (the one I've always used) running Win 10 pro. And yep, I have the launcher on my desktop and that's what I'm clicking on. I swear I fight with this thing every Christmas season. lol!

The IoX Launcher is 100% compatible with your computer.  Are you running a firewall or antivirus software?

Post a screen shot after you've clicked on the IoX Launcher

Also going back to something from earlier about the connection between the PLM in the wall outlet and my ISY, that is just a normal cat 5 cable. I just went and looked again. It's how it's always been. My mother, when she was still alive, had the same setup at her house. Just a normal blue patach cable

The cable between the PLM and the ISY has different pin connections than the stock ethernet cables.

From the UDI Wiki

ISY Launcher cannot find ISY

  • Make certain that you are using ISY Launcher. This is a MUST
  • If you have VPN software running, Admin Console cannot search for ISY on your computer. Please disable the VPN, find ISY's IP address and then click the Add button and enter it manually
  • Make certain that, after reboot, the pattern of lights is as described here
  • If you have recently changed your modem/router, please follow these instructions
  • If you have any firewall software, make sure it's configured properly
  • If all the above have been checked, it's almost a guarantee that that your ISY is not on the same network as your computer. Perhaps at some point you might have configured ISY with a static IP address. Or, that your WiFi network is not connected to the wired network.

ISY Not Found

If IoX Launcher cannot find your device (ISY994 [EOL], Polisy, eisy):

  1. Most importantly, you need to reinstall the IoX Launcher
  2. VPN software is running on your computer or you're on a VPN network
  3. Unit is not on the same network as your computer. Perhaps you changed routers? If so: follow these instructions
  4. If not #1, please open your router page and see whether or not you see ISY994-EMS (for ISY994 [EOL]), polisy (for Polisy), or eisy (for eisy) in the list of LAN clients. If you find the IP address, then, in IoX Finder, click on the Add button and enter
    1. ISY994: http://1.2.3.4/desc (replace 1.2.3.4 with the actual IP of ISY in the router)
    2. Polisy/eisy: https://1.2.3.4:8443/desc (replace 1.2.3.4 with the actual IP of Polisy/eisy in the router)
  5. If not #2, then perhaps the unit is not powering on:
    1. ISY994: Please make sure the LED pattern is as outlined here
    2. Polisy: Reboot the unit, all 3 LEDs should get lit and then only the left most is lit. Wait for 30-60 seconds. You may hear a beep.
    3. eisy: Reboot the unit, allow 2-3 minutes for everything to boot and stabilize before attempting to open IoX Launcher
  6. If not #3, the issue is that you might have firewall/VPN or antivirus software (especially VPN) blocking network communications.

Ah ok. I swear it was the same light blue as my other patch cables so...

i'll take a look at the steps above in a bit, for now I'm letting it sit there and think about itself lol!

there definitely is something up, tho I don't know what or how. i just looked on my router (linksys) for all LAN connections and I don't see anything that looks like the ISY. it's on port 4 of the router, when I power cycle the ISY, the router light goes off and comes back on as expected. But..... Oddly I do see one of my cameras on the LAN connections even tho it's clearly wireless and says wireless. I'm going to try to release all DHCP leases and see what that does

SUCCESS! The iox finder wouldn't find it, but i was able to get the IP Address after the router cleared all leases and then i could confirm IP vs MAC Address on the ISY and give that to the launcher.

Thanks for going down the rabbit hole with me! Buys me some time before I decide what I'm going to do with the eISY

Glad you got it resolved. Make sure you have DHCP enabled on your router. Your ISY should have shown up in the admin console.

Be sure to save the IoX finder's url results. It makes it much easier to load them back in later when things get finicky again.

Poked around more with this when I got home from work and while I have DHCP on the router (101 and higher for the 4th octet), I for whatever reason have a static IP set on the ISY (.5). I'm wondering if I did it so that I could find it from outside the LAN? It's been so long since I've had to change anything on the setup here, I'm not sure why I did it.... The theory is I shouldn't have to set a static IP to access from outside the LAN, right?

Its best to use a reserved address rather than a static address

I switched it to DHCP on the console and reserved the IP on the router.... went back into the launcher after the ISY rebooted and back to not finding it. I had to put in its reserved IP address to get in and all is fine but i guess my setup is just finicky

You'll want to restart the isy after that change if you didn't
