I've got a Polisy running IoX 5.9.1 (FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE-p6). It's got maybe 50 programs and 50 devices.

I'm seeing lots of posts about 6.x.x versions, and that they're primarily meant for eisy products, but also that a Polisy update is "possible".

I'm wondering if it's worth it to update.

Honestly my system is running fine, but it would be nice to get rid of the Java interface. Aside from that, I'm wondering what other benefits 6.x.x would give me -- and, what other possible hiccups I could encounter with a newer version.

Well, you get the latest updates and fixes, and will likely make any eventual move to a eisy smoother. You get eisy-ui, which will become fully functional by year's end. Support for the new zwave and zigbee dongles. Keeping it current costs nothing, and can only help.

This is something I'm particularly interested in - if it were really true that this update is all good stuff, why didn't UDI make it possible to automatically update from 5.9.x? What's the reason for needing to do a manual update?

I saw mention of Polisy running on slower hardware and therefore 6.x.x might seem sluggish, is this true? If so, has anyone who has done the update noticed? Is it "minor annoyance" sluggish or "almost unusable"?

I have a Polisy on 6.0.5. My memory may be failing me, but I am pretty sure that upgrade was from the admin console, not ssh. I have not ventured into moving my Polisy to 6.1.x, but I imagine I will be doing that shortly.

My home is and has been running on a Polisy with version 5.91 pretty much since 5.9 came out. None of upgrades since have added anything that would make any difference to how I use it. I use the admin console or the PG3x interface no more that 3 or 4 times a year. For the most part it just runs and does what it's supposed to.

For something that's controlling things in my home, I tend to try and not break things. Upgrades sometimes (not often) break things.

Moving to 6.1.1 and eisy-ui is a big change, I'm still trying to decide if it's worth the risk.

It's a little bit slower than a eisy, but hardly feels "sluggish", more like a one second pause when loading some things. One thing that hasn't been mentioned about eisy-ui is that loading programs into the editor is almost instantaneous. You can literally log into eisy-ui and edit a program in seconds. It loads the program in real time, whereas with the admin console you log in, with a long delay before you can see the node list, then click on the Programs tab and another long delay before the program list appears. It can get annoying.
