Sold house and new owner wants the ISY

I'll leave all of the Insteon devices installed, the PLM, and the ISY994i. I can remove my email from all of the ISY notifications.  I haven't done much with the ISY for a few years and don't remember how I set it up.

What do I need to tell the new owner regarding his computer setup and ISY app download?

Do I need to contact UD to change the email and/or address?

No! The Isy is completely local so UDI doesn't necessarily need to be involved. If you have the portal they would revoke access and update login information. If you Google Isy wiki and isy cookbook, you'll find the wiki pages and cookbook for the Isy. Both will help educate him on how things work and potentially how to accomplish different tasks.

I am about to dive into the same scenario, possibly.

After reading so many disasters in forums for the last 40 years, I am really trying to avoid this problem. I have excluded my Home Automation system from the sale, despite the barking of the Realestate Agent. My excuse is, it is too complex for the average person but if they want to make a fuss, wanting it, I will restrict the amount of hours of help they get. It is still attractive,as a bargaining chip but only to certain techie people, and then they usually don't want somebody else's mess.

As @lilyoyo1 suggests give them links to the WIki and specifically the Cookbook.

Make sure the ISY doesn't have static IP set on the device so when they setup new networking equipment it will get an IP address automatically. They will then find (in the cookbook) how to setup static IP reservation on their network gear.

Also provide links to the forums and the ISY Launcher (referenced in the Wiki and on the forums). That's the best thing for them to have on their computer to access the ISY.

Top 6 items to suggest:

  1. ISY Wiki - https://wiki.universal-devices.com/
  2. ISY Auto DHCP - reset password to default [admin] (keep it simple!)
  3. Java - https://java.com/ (just "plain" Java 8 - no fancy java downloads!)
  4. ISY Launcher - https://isy.universal-devices.com/start.jnlp
  5. UD Forums - https://forum.universal-devices.com/
  6. UD Mobile - App for Apple & Android - https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=UD_Mobile

I sold a home with an ISY994i and about 60 Insteon devices installed. I spent two hours with the new owner getting a feel for them; very tech savvy; and explaining that the system needed regular maintenance. They sent me a certified letter a week later saying I was responsible in perpetuity to supply them with support at no cost. I called their realtor and point blank told them that if their client ever contacted me again I would sue them for harassment. I also reminded the realtor that the house was sold as is, please explain to your client what that means.

The ISY has been offline since then. I suspect they pulled everything out and installed either something they understood or went back to a dumb house.

In retrospect I would never sell a house again with any tech installed. It wasn't worth the hassle. Not to mention I could be making a killing on EBay with all those Insteon switches / dimmers / etc. ?

@kzboray, you are very wise. Not one week goes by without new owners calling us and expecting a crash course, support, training, and almost all are so demanding. It's just a nightmare dealing with new owners. So, lately, we just send them a canned response:

  1. The most important thing is to make sure you have the username/password to login to ISY
  2. Once you have that, start from here https://www.universal-devices.com/start so that you can access ISY. Once you have accessed ISY:
  3. The best source for information, tutorials, and examples is our Wiki and the best reading material is our Cookbook
  4. If you have specific questions, we’d be delighted to answer them (the same method as you used to create this ticket)
  5. We have a huge and very friendly user community at our forum
  6. And, if you would like training and remote session support, we offer scheduled remote sessions (training, walkthrough, programming, etc.) at $125/hour

@roadking2003, in addition to what kzboray suggested, please leave them your credentials, a backup, and a link to https://www.universal-devices.com/start . Also, you can transfer your ISY Portal account:https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=ISY_Portal_Transfer_Instructions.

With kind regards,
Michel

I'm not finding Insteon switches available at smarthome.com or amazon. For that reason alone, I would be taking all the switches with me the next time I sell a house. I left them the last time.
