Looking for unobtrusive wire for an Insteon relay

Is the floor carpet or hardwood? Could use standard cat5 or telephone wire and carefully shove it under the base and between the carpet and you wouldn’t see it. Usually the tack strip for carpet it a bit from the wall leaving a small space. But as Teken says longer runs could be an issue so before you install make your cut and test the length first to make sure it works. You probably know this but some people don’t think about length issues. Also plastic putty knife works well so you don’t damage the wire. Just a thought. -
Your on a roll! Something to think about is a VPN server on your router (OpenVPN). Then you can connect to your home via the VPN and access local LAN IPs if you miss port forwarding and outside access to your devices. Also secondary use, if your using a random WiFi network, say a hotel you can connect to your home and secure all traffic. Just a thought. One more thing if you want to get CRaZY [emoji12] - check out PiHole.

In no way am I a networking guru, so maybe MWareman or mwestern can jump in here, but I *think* that putting them on a different subnet or on their own network (like the guest) might help if they are collecting LAN data that you don’t want them to have because they are separated from you main network. This wouldn’t be a full solution but might be a good step. That said they wouldn’t be able to control other devices on the network either so if the ISY is on a different subnet you would need the portal for the Echos to go out to the internet and then come back in to the ISY. Which could be good or bad depending on your needs. For 2017 my goal was privacy and find a mix between what I used and what I need. It ended up being a slow process and I am still working towards it. I don’t think it will ever be 100% complete but everything I do now, “Privacy” is my first concern.

I also do this with my pfsense however I do not have any Amazon devices (anymore). I installed ntop on my Pfsense that allows me to see and stop traffic to certain countries. I noticed my LED controllers had outgoing connections (not nearly as much as the Echo) and stopped it all. I did notice when I had my DOTs they had a lot of traffic like what your seeing and I stopped using all of them. Ntop: http://pfsensesetup.com/ntop-an-introduction/

What does Mobilinc use spoken fields for?
-
You need to know if one of the “lines” (black wires) powers the other box or not. Also if you remove the red wire what side disconnects to the load?
-
At the end of the day as long as the switch has power doesnt matter. If you remove the black wire on one side do you lose power on the other?
-
I am not able to call tonight but if you want and “can” (and cant figure it out) I will PM you my phone number and walk you through it tomorrow on the phone. Its easier to explain. The pic of the insteon switch looks correct. Does it work as expected? On/off?
-
One of the red or black (most of the time black) is your 120v line - and red is the load. Do you not have a bundle of white wires connected behind the other switch in that box? White are normally the neutrals. In this case seeing it on one switch is most likely the “traveler”. (You can use any color, but most of the time its another black wire) Also know you will be capping the traveler as it is not needed with Insteon. Mark the wires with 120v with tape. Then the other is the load. On a three way Insteon its just white/neutrals, each switch will need the “line” (for power) and one switch will use the red that will go to the “load” /light. The other side will get capped off.

Do you have a volt meter?

Maybe take pix of both boxes and wires? Could help us, help you more too.

FWIW You can have push notifications now with services like Pushover. Look at the wiki.

I am not sure I truly believe this statement. There was a case in a US court where they had requested the Alexa information and there was 30s prior and after where it also grabbed info. http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-has-handed-alexa-recordings-to-police-in-an-arkansas-murder-case-2017-3 I don’t have anything to hide but I want to protect my privacy. I am not going to tell you or anyone else your wrong and not to use these devices. However my choice is I am not going to put an always listening device in my home. Furthermore removing all the phrases resulted in some interesting things my DOTs picked up without using the wake word. My point to this actually wasnt the fact of privacy but to say you dont need a Echo or DOT to use the Alexa/ISY portal. Which is pretty nice.

Does anyone make an Insteon announcement speaker/device

We should all contribute to a shared repository somewhere. This would help others as well. Why recreate the wheel when I am sure we all have many of the same things. -

What would be really nice is Polygot as an imagine with everything necessary and ready to run. Then possibly another as a Docker image. This way for anyone who does not want to dive deep into a learning curve and maybe not 100% tech savvy can still be able to easily get up and running on multiple devices as still be platform agnostic. -
I am an authorized reseller for Hunter Douglas, can drop ship them to anywhere in the Continental United States and you will have a full manufactures warranty. If anyone is interested in Hunter Douglas blinds feel free to PM me.

Neither does California but that's a whole Nother subject and we digress as always [emoji13] Also we have "Black Bears" not brown bears but thats probably not politically correct.

All my point was, although the Aeotec sensor costs a little more theres more features, runs off power, is ZWave, as small or smaller than the Insteon, and works with UDI ISY. Worth the $10 more in my opinion. The downside is its not waterproof but neither is the Insteon. Thats all.
