I have a rather extensive assortment of Insteon devices with a few z-wave, being controlled by version 4.7.3. I would like to update to enjoy more of the features of my z-wave devices. I wonder if the 5.x.x. version will ever appear as a standard. "Beta" scares me, even though it appears many are using it successfully. If it's that good, let's get it on the market! simplextech Posted February 8, 2019 Share Posted February 8, 2019 Since getting my ISY the first thing I did was update to the 5.0.14Beta and start adding Z-Wave devices. I've had good success with only a few hiccups/issues. Some of my issues are self induced as I'm testing controller shifts and secondary controller functions which many would not be doing from different "other" controllers. With that... so far so good. There are still issues with some multi-sensor devices but so far I haven't noticed any major show stoppers just yet. Actually in my testing I'm finding that I like Insteon a lot more than I originally thought I would so I've bought a bunch of switches and dimmers to replace some of my z-wave stuff. Link to comment

I hosed the SD Card in my ISY994i. The only fix was remove it, reformat it in a PC and start fresh. Link to comment

I am sorry to hear that. By far most users have not have negative experiences. If you make a backup and some free time, you may try again, and you can always go back to previous version. Bumbershoot Posted February 8, 2019 Share Posted February 8, 2019 At this point, it seems the the 5.x.x series of firmware is essentially feature complete and stable, as it has been over a few iterations now (which in my mind is what a Beta should be). There are still migration issues that seem to need a bit of work (mostly to do with program conversion), as well as idiosyncrasies with devices that need working through. For me (and to be fair, I'm not terribly risk averse -- I always maintain a current backup of my ISY) the multiple benefits of nodeservers made the pain and frustration of migration worthwhile. They have changed the game for the ISY, and multi-channel Z-Wave devices haven't hurt any, either. If you decide you don't like pain/cost of the upgrade, restore your old firmware and backup. The only thing lost is some time/hair follicles. If you decide to upgrade, you may have some migration issues. You will, however, have a much expanded universe of devices (Polyglot, NodeLink, Z-Wave multi-channel and some Insteon) available to you, as well as some nice programming features. I'd be surprised if you see stability issues with the base platform, as not many are reported here. Link to comment

In short, for every reported device/issue combination, we had to make modifications for that specific device in the firmware (and thus another firmware release). The list is just too long. So, since 5.0.14 seems to be very stable, we started working on a dynamic configuration feature for some of these issues so that we won't need a firmware update for every permutation of device/feature nonsense. Very much like node servers. This has taken longer than expected but, if it works, then it'll make things much easier for us all. In short, that's where we are right now and I do appreciate your patience. For those on the fence, if you do not need 5.0.x features, you don't have to migrate. Terrific, that sounds like a significant feature. It very much sounds to me that UDI considers 5.0.14 to be stable, though not entirely feature complete (if you're not investing in Z-Wave, however, it may well be). Also, I don't see any promises made here that the migration process will be made entirely automatic or painless (given the endless configurability of the environments that the ISY can control, is it even reasonable to expect that?) I certainly didn't find the migration to be onerous. YMMV. Link to comment
