UPGRADE PACKAGES button explanation

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Inside the ADMIN CONSOLE in 5.4.4 or later there is a button called UPGRADE PACKAGES.

I ran it yesterday after Michel said DONT USE SSH anymore to update.  (see my post about OS crash for his explanation)

When clicking on this i get different results.

There have been talks about this button but I cant find an explanation of the beeps other than 4 beeps and its done.  If its on here I cant find it.

So here are my results.....

When done I got 4 quick beeps.   That means update is done.  I know that part.

As a test today, I just ran it again and got one long beep.  I waited like 5 min after and no more beeps.

an hour later I tried again and a long beep.

My theory is the LONG beep means no updates to be run?

Everything is working.  I just want to make sure I understand the beeps!!!

"Don't use SSH anymore to update"? ..but it is so much simpler and I gave up on clicking that hard to find reset button. I don't think it every worked properly on my Polisy, yet. I cannot tell if it is pushed or not. Blindly pushing a metal object into a hole is not a good thing. I have never been sure there is even a PB back there.

Not that button.  He means the button on the Configuration tab of the AC.

In this thread just the other day:

I can't help with the second part of your question.

Thanks @Bumbershoot   I am going to be in meetings a lot today so I appreciate you clearing up any confusion.

I hope Michel can chime in and let us know what the beeps are.  I also send them an email and if they reply there I will repost the answer here later.

Its just good to know what the beeps mean so you know if there is a problem or not.

I also asked for a way to let Admin console know.   Its hard to hear the beep from my office!!!

My Polisy beeps a total of six times - one long, followed by five short - I suspect that means something such as everything is up to date.  Some update status in the AC would be useful.  The beeps are hard to hear for me as well.

actually your correct.  Yesterday it was one long beep and then 4 beeps about 30 seconds or so later.

Today its just one long beep.   Did you try it a second time?  I still think that means no updates.  4 beeps it says means update complete.

Hope I never have to answer the question how many times did it beep, because I will never know that answer.  Can't hear them and the hardware is nowhere near where I would be hitting the upgrade button.

One thing is was told to leave it alone until the update finishes so its nice to know.

but the main concern is why am I not getting the 4 beeps now.  Just one.  Hopefully it just means no update but I cant find any posts or documentation confirming that.

The point of my post is there should be a better way.  It would solve your problem too.  A nice Upgrade status display in the Admin Console near the button.  Or if that's not possible because the admin console needs to close, push text out on a specific port so the user can open a web browser to something like http://ip.of.my.polisy:4357 then press the button and see upgrade status in the web browser. (HA user's might recognize 4357 spells HELP on the phone dial and is the HA Port that Supervior uses to display system status)  Doing something like that would enable specific upgrade status messages.

I agree.  They hinted it was coming!!!

Heard from Universal Devices

when you click on button and you get one LONG beep that means nothing to be done.  You can verify because when its working all three lights blink.  When done only the one light is lit (facing front farthest to the left)

if there are packages to be installed you will get 4 short beeps when done.

I am confirming because some people reported 6 beeps total and some 5.  All of them said the first one was long.

But if thats the case and you always get a long beep, how do you know if its done or not?

I have emailed for more confirmation,  but to be safe I would listen for beeps and check the status lights

My did the same thing. Michel had to fix it. Here is a link to another thread that discusses it.

Is that the button I didn't know I needed to push because I didn't know there was one? :)

I am in the same boat.  I did what I was told in the past and it came back to bite me.  The rules change here daily  LOL

The only reason I am responding to this topic is to make sure this topic is stopped because it does nothing but create confusion.

Beeps are there in lieu of a progress bar which we are working on. There's absolutely no way to describe all the different permutation of beeps that you may experience. For instance, if the upgrade process installs udx or isy, then those have their own set of beeps.

So, for now, the best thing to do is to not upgrade unless you are sent an email to upgrade. Once we have the progress bar working, then you can upgrade as many times as @macjeff does (once every second).

In any case, the issue of crash and corrupted user database has been fixed. If and only if you are experiencing this issue, please click on the upgrade button.

With kind regards,
Michel

@tritip.films

What PC operating system are you using?

What's the firmware and UI version showing on your Polisy?

What version of Java are you running?

Did you clear your Java cache, including all applications, before downloading the ISY Launcher?

The forum needs a sticky (permanently at the top)  thread with announcements for new features only from our fearless leader(s), so that user stay informed of recent upgrades and avoid some of the new feature confusion in the forum as well as lower the WTF? traffic here.

Sort of like  a digital Vatican balcony? :)  :)

Thanks!

@techman I appreciate you asking:

  • Running on Mac OS with latest Java - Caches have been cleared.
  • Polisy upgraded to latest versions (the "classic"  way - via pkg installer)

I'll delete the ISY finder, reset all Java caches and try re-downloading.

Thanks.  Attached is an example of some of the odd behavior.

When you clear your Java cache and its applications that will also remove the ISY Finder from your desktop., which you'll then need to re-install

If you still have the issue after reinstalling the ISY finder, then you should open a support ticket with UDI

@tritip.films What MacOS are you running? Sometimes Mac users have quick success with ISY Launcher. Other times it's a struggle. I don't know why, and it's strange. Even some that it works great for months/years suddenly will have a time it doesn't want to pay well. To me it's just Mac+Java = issues. Make sure you've followed the steps mentioned in the wiki for MacOS users - https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=Main_Page#MAC_Users

What brand is your router?

In your image above you say the *.36 IP is not for the Polisy, but does appear to be for your original ISY994 box since the UUID matches. Check your router IP table (connected devices/DHCP table). Make sure your IP for the UUID/MAC address is what you think it is/should be. Something is reporting the 192.168.1.36 address as an ISY. To me that means you don't have DHCP reservation for your ISY994 box and it's changed. Are you able to log into devices at both the 192.168.1.16 and .36 addresses? Or does only one connect?

While logged into your Router look for the MAC address for your Polisy and make note of the IP address. Then in finder add the IP address as described in the Wiki Polisy User Guide (https://wiki.universal-devices.com/index.php?title=Polisy:User_Guide#Can.27t_Find_Polisy)

@geddy thanks, it's not a router problem.
I agree the launcher on Mac can be flakey which is why I suspected it to be the cause.

I finally gave in and factory reset the polisy.  Problem seems to be solved for now.
